Holy cow that's sweet! I had no idea what to expect when I poured, and that first sip was a bit of a shocker. Guess what - it's supposed to be sweet.
Sauternes is a sub region of the Bordeaux region of France, famous for its sweet white wines made from the semillon grape with occasional additions of its antimatter twin, sauvignon blanc. The muggy summer climate of the region produces a semillon prone to sweetness that honey with age as well as seem a comfy environment for Botrytis cinerea, a particular mold that enjoys semillon grapes, and a required element in the production of Sauternes. The grapes are left on the vine past ripe and into rot, where they shrivel and succumb to the botrytis which leads to the complex Sauternes. Crazy business this wine stuff, eh?
At first this wine scared me, but with understanding, comes appreciation, and I definitely appreciate the full character of this smooth wine with honey, pear and apricot flavors. This will notbe a regular with me, but I wouldn't shy away from another glass.
